Indian Girl
"Clee"
I'd never worked with a Thoroughbred before.
And this one didn't come highly recommended.
In fact, I was told early on that this horse
probably belonged in a can
and that she'd never amount to anything.
I don't know if is says more about that person's judgement or my stupidity
but I forged ahead and tried to "solve" this horse as a puzzle.
I listened to her
and saw what made her go off the deep end
and then figured out a way to work around it
never compromising what I was asking for
but maybe learning how to change the way I asked it.
We went ten rounds, this horse and I - but when the dust had settled,
I had learned how to train a horse to jump
and she had learned how to better converse with humans.
And at the end of it all, I had a 14 year old kid
riding 4 foot courses with this mare.
Joanna owned Clee for several years
and together they leaped tall buildings in a single bound.
When Jo's life changed and took her places where she can't keep the horse,
I got the opportunity to have this mare.
I need another horse like I need a hole in the head,
and she's not suited to be a true lesson horse,
but we've been together for a really long time
and she's happy at Serendipity
and she still has things to teach -
to me and to others -
and so here she stays!
